The blue city

Amphitheatrically built along the coastline, at the crossroads of the East and West, Kavala combines the mountain and the sea, picturesque charm and modern life, archaeological tours, captivating excursions, and moments of tranquillity amidst nature.
The city exudes a distinctive atmosphere thanks to its recent history, with its neoclassical buildings and imposing tobacco warehouses, which bear witness to an era of economic prosperity. In what was once known as the ‘Mecca of Tobacco’, thousands of tobacco workers, men and women, toiled away in the early 20th century, their figures immortalised in the black and white photographs of the Tobacco Museum. At the time, Kavala was the largest tobacco production centre in the country.
The blue city, as the locals call it, boasts bright blue waters, sandy beaches, and tavernas by the sea. Its picturesque port, with its palm trees and old cobblestones, is a distinctive feature where modern buildings coexist with fish tavernas, fishing boats, and sailboats.
Its strategic and economic significance throughout the centuries is due to its location on Via Egnatia, its port, and the natural fortifications of the old town. Kavala exudes history and invites you to discover hidden treasures in monuments, tobacco warehouses, and districts straight out of a postcard.
