Mountains, lakes, rivers, and modern history

Kilkis is located in northern Greece, between Thessaloniki and the border with North Macedonia. The landscape combines mountains, lakes, and fertile plains, and it remains a destination largely unknown to the general public.
The city's distinctive name is said to derive from the Latin word Callicum, which was the leather sieve used to collect gold from the Gallikos River during Roman rule. The region bears strong marks of more modern Greek history. The Battle of Kilkis-Lachanas in 1913 was pivotal in the development of the Balkan Wars, and the Battle of Skra in 1918 is also renowned.
At the same time, the area has welcomed populations from Asia Minor, Pontus, and Eastern Thrace, fostering a rich cultural mosaic of customs, music, and flavours.
Nature has been generous with Kilkis. Lake Doirani, the waterfalls of Skra, the large rivers, the impressive mountains of Paiko and Belles, and the trails through forests and gorges offer moments of tranquillity and connection with the environment. It is an ideal place for hiking, exploring, and relaxing.
In Kilkis, hospitality is simple and genuine. The flavours of Macedonian cuisine, local panigyria (traditional festivals), and human stories combine to create a destination that will enchant you.
