The coffee capital

Built on the banks of the Pinios River, surrounded by the fertile Thessalian plain and towering mountains, Larissa is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in Greece. Its history dates back to the Neolithic period. The city flourished as a significant hub since antiquity, absorbing Roman, Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman influences, which have left scattered monuments as testaments to its past.
At the heart of the historic centre rises the hill of Agios Achillios, the acropolis of ancient Larissa, known today as the Frourio (Fortress). Here, everyday life blends seamlessly with ancient monuments and Ottoman buildings, alongside pedestrian streets where you can enjoy leisurely strolls and savour the traditional flavours of Thessalian cuisine, a wide array of meze dishes and exquisite cheeses, which you can enjoy with local wines and tsipouro.
The present-day city abounds with coffee shops, earning it the reputation as a city of coffee, while the aromas of freshly baked bread and traditional pies waft through its neighbourhoods. The Pinios River is omnipresent, adding an aquatic element to a city renowned for its warmth. Around the city stretches the Thessalian plain, generously offering its produce: cotton, cereals, wine, fruits and vegetables.
