A ‘smart’ city nestled amidst verdant landscapes

Trikala lies on the banks of the Litheos River, a tributary of the Pinios River, which meanders through the city, bestowing a unique natural beauty upon it.
The city is built on the site of ancient Trikke, the birthplace of Asclepius, the god of medicine. Throughout its long and storied history, Trikala has evolved into a significant economic and social hub. During the Ottoman period, it was renowned for its artisanal crafts, producing exquisite woollen textiles and leather goods. In the early 20th century, Trikala played a pivotal role in the agricultural struggles against the landowners. It was here that the first Agricultural Cooperative in Greece was established in 1906.
Today, Trikala is a city awash with greenery, squares, parks, and pedestrian zones, alongside historic industrial buildings and a magnificent river that breathes life and adds a touch of aquatic charm. The old town sprawls amphitheatrically across the hillside, encircling and permeating the Byzantine castle, with impressive 18th and 19th-century mansions nestled beside ancient churches and cobbled alleyways.
Trikala has a reputation as a "smart" city, with pioneering systems, electric buses and bicycles, as well as applications that improve the lives of residents and visitors.
A short distance from the city lies the fir-covered mountain range of Pindus, dotted with traditional villages and imbued with a simple, unpretentious atmosphere, untouched by technology. Only the magic of nature awaits.
