Acropolis Museum

A Modern Home for History

The Acropolis Museum was created to house the invaluable finds from the Sacred Rock and its slopes. The exhibition areas are deployed across three levels, as well as at the base of the building. There, an archaeological excavation of an ancient Athenian neighbourhood is visible through the glass floors of the ground floor, where visitors will soon be able to walk.
Exploring the Collections
On the ground floor, the ‘Gallery of the Acropolis Slopes’ showcases finds from the sanctuaries and the settlement on the hillside. Ascending to the first floor, the ‘Archaic Acropolis Gallery’ delights visitors with sculptures from the early temples and the votive offerings of the faithful, such as the renowned Korai and the horsemen.
The experience culminates on the third level, in the ‘Parthenon Gallery’. Around the perimeter, the frieze depicting the Panathenaic procession is displayed in a continuous sequence. The metopes have been mounted between steel columns, equal in number to those of the ancient temple. Alongside these, the larger-than-life pediments dominate: the eastern one depicting the birth of Athena and the western showing the contest between Athena and Poseidon. The visit concludes with a return to the first level and the sculptures of the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion.
An Experience for the Entire Family
The museum invites visitors of all ages to enjoy a delightful day. Every weekend, a Virtual Reality room offers impressive 3D projections, and family-friendly games for identifying the goddess Athena are available. Visitors can relax at the ground-floor café, overlooking the excavation site, or at the second-floor restaurant, savouring the panoramic view of the Parthenon.
Education and Digital Exploration
Explore the museum digitally through the Google Art Project and Street View. Schools can enjoy special programmes, educational materials, museum kits, and innovative digital applications, such as ‘Colour the Peplos Kore’, bringing children into creative contact with ancient culture.
