The “Old University” beneath the Acropolis
In the heart of Plaka stands one of the few surviving buildings from the pre-Ottoman period: the well-known “Oikia Kleanthous” (House of Kleanthis). Part of the structure dates back to the Frankish era, while it was purchased and renovated by architect Stamatios Kleanthis and engineer Eduard Schaubert. These two men drafted the first city plan of Athens in 1832, at the behest of Ioannis Kapodistrias. A distinctive feature of the building is the imposing covered loggia, which allows visitors to freely admire the entire historical centre.
The Cradle of Greek Education
The first higher education institution of the independent Greek state operated at this iconic location from 1837 to 1841. For this reason, the building dominates the foot of the Acropolis and appears in numerous paintings of old Athens as the “Old University”. In 1987, to mark the 150th anniversary of the University of Athens, the building was inaugurated as a Museum, with the aim of collecting and showcasing the historical treasures of the institution.
Scientific Treasures and Collections
The museum's collections showcase the University's contribution to the scientific and political life of Greece, particularly during the 19th century. Visitors can admire rare manuscripts, books, and pioneering scientific instruments of the era. Stand-out exhibits include historical paintings, rare photographs, and the iconic banner of the University, created by the great painter Nikolaos Gyzis.
Culture in the Courtyard
The museum remains a vibrant organisation, offering specially designed guided tours for all ages. Its halls host events and temporary exhibitions, while during the summer months, the idyllic cobbled courtyards covered by vines come to life. Under the moonlight, the museum offers unique evenings of music, poetry, dance, and theatre, providing an authentic experience in Athens’ most historic neighbourhood.
