A Beacon of Contemporary Art
A few metres from the Kallimarmaro Stadium, in Pagrati, an imposing 11-storey building houses one of the most important art collections in the world. The Goulandris Museum offers a unique journey into contemporary European and Greek creations, housing 180 rare works of art in a state-of-the-art space covering a total area of 7,250 square metres.
A Century of Contemporary European Art
On the two lower floors, visitors encounter leading names in global art from the 1880–1980 period. Under the imposing gaze of El Greco, masterpieces by Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Kandinsky, and Chagall are on display. The collection, passionately assembled by Basil and Eliza Goulandris over five decades, also includes important sculptures by Giacometti and Rodin. A special place is held by the works of Paul Cézanne, the first modern painter to join the collection, whom Picasso called "father of us all."
The Greek Collection and Applied Arts
The 3rd and 4th floors are dedicated to modern and contemporary Greek art. Visitors can admire works by great artists such as Yannis Moralis, Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas and Alekos Fassianos. In addition to paintings, the museum houses an exceptional room featuring 18th-century French furniture by renowned cabinetmakers, as well as Chinese artworks made of jade and porcelain.
Education, Culture, and Experience
The museum is a vibrant organisation that offers documentary screenings, concerts, theatrical performances, and creative workshops for all ages every weekend. On the ground floor, the shop offers unique products inspired by the collection, while the café-restaurant serves modern Mediterranean cuisine. For researchers, the library houses 6,000 volumes on the arts, and the privileged view of the Acropolis makes the building an ideal venue for international conferences and events.
