The gastronomy of Skyros

Flavours based on tradition and pure raw ingredients

Skyrian cuisine combines simplicity and tastiness, using fresh and authentic ingredients. Every meal in Skyros is an experience that will bring you closer to the lifestyle of the locals, turning the enjoyment of food into a journey that reveals local culture and hospitality. Most of the raw ingredients — such as olive oil,  vegetables, honey, and almonds — come from small family farms and are turned into simple but evocatively delicious dishes.
The flavours of Skyros stand out for the combination of mainland and island influences. Some of the most distinctive recipes that stand out are giaprakia, small vine leaf dolmadakia (rice and herbs wrapped in vine leaves), oven roast goat with potatoes and lemon, an integral part of Easter customs, and handmade pasta, made with care like in the old days. There are also a lot of delicious local cheeses: graviera, xinotyri and myzithra.
Tiganites (fried doughnuts) with honey hold special importance among desserts, as they are traditionally served at weddings and christenings, symbolising abundance and joy. Skyros amygdalota (almond sweets) have won international awards for their quality, while home-made spoon sweets are a genuine sample of Greek hospitality.
A rather unique dish is  ladopita, a fluffy sweet bread with olive oil, cinnamon, and sugar, served at local festivals and family celebrations.
Complete your gastronomic tour of Skyros with visits to small shops and small cottage industries, where you can try and buy local products. From honey and virgin olive oil, to aromatic herbs and traditional liqueurs, everything carries within it part of the island’s identity. Discover it all, and fill your luggage with flavours and aromas.
