Castles of Preveza

Fortresses of memory in a city with history

A special place among the sights of Preveza is held by its castles, which reveal the region’s eventful history and strategic importance. Built at strategic points overlooking the sea and the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, these fortifications form a unique cultural route.
Within the town you will come across the Castle of Saint Andrew, a solid fortification that began to be built in the 17th century by the Ottomans and was strengthened by the Venetians and later by Ali Pasha. The Castle of Saint George (Yeni Kale), on Kyani Akti beach, is an impressive 19th-century work with a distinctive architectural line. Equally emblematic is the Castle of Pantokrator, in the district of the same name, from where you will enjoy magnificent views of the open sea and the sunset.
In the historic centre of the town you will see remains of the Fortress of Bouka, one of the oldest strongholds in the area, guarding the entrance to the gulf as early as the 15th century. A few kilometres outside the town, near Agios Thomas, you will find the Fortress of Laskara, while in the municipal district of Riza, near the Despo bridge, stands the imposing Castle of Riza, from where you can admire the vastness of the Ionian Sea.
The castles of Preveza invite you on a route where history meets the natural landscape. Discover myths, narratives spanning centuries and the distinctive identity of a town that respects and showcases its heritage.
