Fortezza

The Venetian Jewel of Rethymno

North of Rethymno town, atop Palaiokastro hill, stands the imposing Fortezza, the Venetian fortress that is the most iconic landmark in the area. Built in the late 16th century as a bulwark against attacks from the sea, the Fortezza now offers a captivating tour of the era of Venetian rule.
A Journey Through History
Passing through the monumental eastern gate, visitors are transported to a fairytale setting where military architecture meets the administrative organisation of the Venetians. The imposing bastions with their battlements, the perfectly restored powder stores, the water tanks, and the food stores bear witness to the defensive character of the castle. From the bastion of Agios Nikolaos, the view of the Venetian harbour and the old town is breathtaking.
An Administrative and Religious Centre
The Fortezza was more than just a fortress; it was the heart of public life. The Palazzo Pubblico, the Rector’s residence, and the Councillor’s residence dominate the central square. The Episcopal Palace and the Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos give the area its religious air. The Cathedral was later transformed into the impressive Ibrahim Han Mosque, while the chapel of Agios Theodoros Trichinas complements the sacred atmosphere.
Cultural Heritage
Just outside the fortress, within the pentagonal fort dating back to the Ottoman era, lies the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, home to significant finds from across the prefecture.
A visit to Fortezza offers visitors the opportunity to listen to the echoes of the past and wander through paths laden with historical memories. It is an ideal space for a stroll and contemplation, where the tumultuous history of Rethymno unfolds before your eyes, offering the most captivating narrative of Crete.
