The White Tower

The White Tower

The Eternal Symbol of Thessaloniki

The White Tower stands as the most iconic landmark of Thessaloniki, an archetypal image etched into the collective consciousness. With its distinctive cylindrical shape and six floors, it dominates the waterfront, serving as the city’s ultimate landmark, captured in countless photographs at every time of day.
A Journey Through History and Architecture
Its construction dates back to the early Ottoman period, likely after 1530, built upon a pre-existing Byzantine structure. It is believed that the architect was the renowned Mimar Sinan, who also designed the similar Tower of Valona in Albania. In its original form, it featured a low octagonal enclosure with three additional towers, where heavy cannons were likely positioned to control the port. Initially named the Lion Tower and later known as the Fortress of Kalamaria, after 1826 it became known as the Blood Tower due to the massacres that took place there. It owes its current name to the imprisoned Nathan Guidili, who whitewashed the tower in 1891 in exchange for his freedom.
A Tower with Many Roles
Over the centuries, it has served as a defensive fortress, a communications centre for the Allies during World War I, and a sanctuary for ancient artefacts. From 1912 to 1983, it housed the city's air defence, the University's meteorology laboratory, and the Sea Scout Troops, forever a vigilant guardian of Thessaloniki.
Centre of Knowledge and Culture
Today, the renovated Tower serves as an exhibition space under the auspices of the Museum of Byzantine Culture. The permanent exhibition allows visitors to delve into the historical phases of the city, while educational programmes and temporary iconography exhibitions are also hosted. The experience culminates on the terrace, where informative signs connect the unique view with its past. This is a journey through time that combines historical memory with the visual delight of the Thermaic Gulf, reaffirming the monument's role as an eternal meeting point.
