The Majestic Citadel of the Messinian Gulf
The Castle of Koroni stands as one of the most elegant examples of Venetian fortress architecture and one of the few castles in Greece that still contain homes and churches within its walls. Its imposing structure dominates the Akritas promontory, at the southern end of the Messinian Gulf. It was built by the Venetians in the 13th century, on the ruins of Byzantine and ancient fortifications, and was significantly reinforced by the Ottomans in the 16th century.
