Hiking at the southernmost tip of mainland Greece
The route from Kokkinogeia to Cape Tainaron is one of the most evocative hikes in Greece. According to mythological tradition, this was the site of a necromanteion (oracle of the dead) or a sanctuary of Poseidon, mythically linked to a gateway to the Underworld.
A path of low difficulty, exposed to the light and the winds of Mani, leads gradually from the arid landscape and jagged stone formations to the point where the land seemingly ends. The natural beauty is profound: low shrubby vegetation, unobstructed views of the open sea, and a sense of absolute isolation that transforms the walk into an experience of inner focus.
The trail begins at the end of the Areopoli–Tainaron road, next to the Byzantine Church of Agioi Asomatoi, which was constructed using materials from the Temple of Tainarian Poseidon. As you walk, you will encounter the remains of the ancient settlement of Tainaria nestled among bushes of oregano and thyme. A highlight is the famous Hellenistic mosaic floor, known as the "Star of Aria", a find of rare aesthetic beauty that reinforces the symbolism of this place as the boundary between the world of the living and the unknown.
The hike to the lighthouse takes approximately 40–50 minutes. Follow the path and experience firsthand the sensation of standing at the very edge of the land.
