Mountaineering in Taygetos

Conquering the Summit of Profitis Ilias

Mount Taygetus offers unique experiences with a number of trails leading to its peaks. Hikers can follow the European path E4 or combine an ascent from the eastern side with a descent through the large gorges on the western slopes, such as Vyros and Rintomo, the Vintolis stream, and the Koskaraka canyon.
The Popular Eastern Route
Most hikers favour the Laconian side. The route begins from Sparta towards Gythio and, after the village of Lefki, turns towards Anogia and Paleopanagia, leading to the hamlet of Toriza. The starting point of the main trail is at Manganiari spring (980m), where there is parking area. The trail is well-marked and crosses a mountainous forest, making the ascent ideal even in summer. After an hour and a half of hiking, visitors reach the mountain refuge at the location of Varvara (1,550m). From there, it takes approximately two and a half hours for the final ascent to the summit of Profitis Ilias, at 2,407 metres.
Alternative Trails and Gorges
Besides the classic route, there are other trails starting from the Messinian or Laconian side. The village of Anavryti is an important hub, with three routes starting there, leading to the gorge of the same name, Mystras, or the refuge. Hikers encounter springs such as Tripodas and Varvara, while in certain sections the trail intersects with forest roads leading to Pentavlous and Lakkomata.
Accommodation and Infrastructure
The mountain refuge in Varvara, built in 1962, has central heating, bunk beds, blankets, and a kitchen, accommodating up to 26 guests. Prior arrangements with the Hellenic Mountaineering Association of Sparta are required for overnight stays. The complete ascent to the summit typically requires two to three days, offering an authentic wilderness experience.
