Gaze upon Aegina from Mount Ellanio

Climb to the island’s highest point

If you are fond of mountain hiking, all you have to do is cross Mount Ellanio, the highest mountain on Aegina. The view will reward you as soon as you reach the summit, at an altitude of 532 metres. From there, you will see the whole of Aegina, Moni Islet, Agistri and even Piraeus.
As you make your way across the mountain, you will discover fragments of the island’s rich history and mythology. You will see the chapel of Prophet Elijah, as well as the Church of the Taxiarchs, which dates back to the 13th century. At the site known as Sfyrihtres, you will come upon the ruins of the Temple of Ellanios Zeus, from which the mountain took its name. The temple is believed to have been built by the mythical hero Aeacus, and the area served as a refuge for locals whenever pirates advanced.
Whether you choose to make the ascent in the morning, to witness nature awakening, or in the afternoon, when the sun gradually bids farewell to the world and tints the sky violet, you should know that climbing Mount Ellanio may not be particularly easy, but it is a truly unique experience. It is important to observe all safety measures as you follow the specially marked walking trails, while for added peace of mind you may wish to seek the company of an experienced, certified guide.
The nearest villages are Pachia Rachi and Anitseo, while there is no public transport connection to the area. Alternatively, you can reach the summit by car, though naturally without enjoying the enchanting experience of the climb itself.
