Cultural Trails in Aegina

Discover the island step by step

Enjoy a different, experiential way of getting to know Aegina’s nature, history and local production through the “Cultural Trails” programme, which supports the protection of cultural heritage and highlights the island as an ideal destination for delightful exploration.
You can follow routes that pass along dirt roads and stone-paved paths, encountering traces of human presence on Aegina dating back to ancient times. Remains of old settlements, mills and souvales (depressions along stream beds that retained water and were reinforced with stone structures) reveal many different ways of life, some of them emerging unexpectedly from untamed nature.
Exploring archaeological sites, country chapels and landscapes of unspoilt vegetation also promises special experiences, reminding us of humanity’s timeless need to be in nature and to be renewed by it.
Some suggested cultural routes, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty, are:
The Mount Ellanio Circuit (8.8 km – approximately 6 hours)
Sfentouri–Olive Grove (3 km – approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes)
Ancient Olive Grove (5.8 km – approximately 3 hours)
Chrysoleontissa (6 km – approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Eastern Aegina (5.8 km – approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes)
Mythical Asopos (5.8 km – approximately 5 hours including the return)
Paliachora (1.2 km – approximately 40 minutes)
Forest (5.2 km – approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes on foot, or 1 hour by bicycle; both estimates include the return)
Aphaia (2.5 km – approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes including the return)
Other routes are also organised from time to time, so do look for information during the period of your visit.
The promotion of Aegina’s walking trails gives you the opportunity to discover the island in a way that brings you into contact with its history and the pulse of nature.
