Archaeological Museum of Messinia

A Treasure in the Heart of Kalamata

In the heart of Kalamata's old market, beside the traditional tavernas and historic Agion Apostolon Square, the Archaeological Museum of Messinia offers a timeless journey from prehistoric times to the Byzantine era. The exhibition's dynamic design follows the imaginary course of the Pamisos River, guiding visitors through the four geographical regions of the prefecture.
A Tour the Four Provinces
The exhibition is divided geographically, allowing for a selective or comprehensive tour:

  • Trifylia: It focuses on the influence of the Palace of Nestor. Notable finds include the golden cup from Peristeria, the rich grave goods from Mycenaean tholos tombs (beehive tombs), and the coins of ancient Kyparissia, an important port that connected Messinia with the West during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

  • Messene: Discover distinctive artefacts from Ancient Messene, including the inscribed stele of Armoneicus and impressive mosaic fragments from a Roman villa in the Desillas area.

  • Pylia: Dominated by finds from the sanctuary of Apollo in Agios Andreas Longa and the late Roman mosaic floor. The Nichoria section is of particular interest, highlighting the daily life and funerary customs of the Mycenaeans.

  • Kalamata: Discover bronze votive offerings from the sanctuary of Artemis Limnatis and the imposing remains of the Early Helladic palaces of Akovitika, dominated by the renowned figurine of a seahorse, a mythical symbol of Poseidon.

Thematic Units and Culture
Beyond its geographical scope, ten distinct thematic sections illuminate aspects such as Messinia under the Villehardouins, Mani in the Despotate of Morea, and Venetian-ruled Pylia. Before leaving, the museum's gift shop offers faithful replicas of ancient works, jewellery, and figurines from across Greece. The museum serves as a living entity, connecting the glorious past with the contemporary daily life of the Messinian capital.
