Soufli Folklore Museum “Gnafala”

The soul of Soufli in a single collection

In a corner of Soufli where time seems to stand still, the “Gnafala” Folklore Museum offers one of the most moving journeys into the history of Thrace. Its name derives from the terminology of sericulture and refers to the first fine threads produced by the silkworm to secure its cocoon. This private initiative by the Bouroulitis family brings together a collection of artefacts that highlight the multifaceted character of Soufli’s society.
Begin your visit through the museum’s ten thematic sections with the warmth of the traditional household and the world of women, where intricate handicrafts, garments and jewellery reveal both the aesthetic sensibilities and the social status of Soufli’s women. Continue with the presentation of men and couples through personal belongings and everyday objects, while the section dedicated to children is particularly touching, filled with handmade toys and childcare items from past eras.
The heart of production comes to life where sericulture tools and looms meet agricultural machinery, reflecting the unbreakable bond between the local people, the land and silk. You will also encounter rare ecclesiastical items, traditional musical instruments, as well as a collection of military and political documents.
More than a guardian of memory, the “Gnafala” Folklore Museum is a vibrant cultural hub that continues to evolve. Since 2007, the Bouroulitis family has organised the “Gnafala” Festival every summer, transforming the space into a celebration of the arts. Concerts, theatrical performances and dance groups breathe new life into tradition, while exhibitions of painting, photography, poetry and video art showcase the vision of contemporary creators.
