Agathonos Monastery

Centuries of devotion in a landscape of rare natural beauty

A sanctuary for freedom fighters during the 1821 War of Independence and a spiritual refuge today, Agathonos Monastery welcomes pilgrims and travellers alike to the slopes of Mount Oiti. Perched at an altitude of 550 metres, the monastery is embraced by lush nature, offering sweeping views of the mountain and the plains. It is a must-visit destination for those seeking moments of peace and reflection.
The Monastery is believed to have been founded between the 14th or 15th century, on the site where an icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered. According to tradition, an older monastery located higher up collapsed due to land subsidence. The monks hid the icon in a cave. Guided by a vision, Hosios Agathon, an ascetic living in the area, recovered the icon and established the current monastery. While the monastery church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the complex also houses four chapels.
Stroll through the monastery’s serene grounds, where the air is filled with birdsong and the scent of well-tended flowers. The four resident monks are always happy to share stories from its history. In 1822, the monastery became the site of the Battle of Agathonos. The army of Dramali Pasha destroyed the complex and killed 32 of the monks. Only three survived, eventually returning to rebuild the community years later. Thanks to their efforts, manuscripts, vessels, icons, and vestments were saved and are still kept in the Monastery today. The interior, with its reverent atmosphere, is home to remarkable frescoes, the oldest of which date back to the 16th-17th centuries, while there are some later murals from the 18th and 20th centuries.
Visitors can also see the incorrupt body of Saint Vissarion of the Agathonos. His body was found in pristine condition during his exhumation in 2006, and he was officially canonised as a Saint in 2022.
Visit Agathonos Monastery to experience the stillness of a place where faith and nature have been intertwined for centuries.
