A landmark of orthodoxy and national memory
The Monastery of the Annunciation, also known as Evangelistria, was founded in the late 18th century by the hieromonk Niphon and Gregorios Hatzistamatis. Built in a verdant location, just outside Hora, Skiathos, it evolved into an intensely active spiritual centre, maintaining to this day its authentic architecture and monastic atmosphere. The monastery complex was completed in 1806 and has been an integral part of the history of the island ever since.
The Monastery became inextricably linked to the Greek War of Independence, as one of the most brilliant pages of modern history was written here: in 1807 the first Greek flag with a white cross on a light blue background was woven and raised over its walls. The oath to freedom was taken by leading fighters in the War for Independence inside the Monastery church. This makes it an important landmark of national memory and pride.
The monastery also houses a museum with priceless exhibits: patriarchal documents, manuscripts that are five centuries old, rare books, holy vestments, as well as the loom where the first flag of the Greek nation was woven. The old olive mill houses the folklore museum. It offers an opportunity for you to discover objects from the daily life of the monks, as well as traditional tools — exhibits of monastic life that illuminate the past of the land.
Beyond its historical and spiritual dimension, the Monastery remains a place of natural wealth, hospitality, and creation. The surrounding area is full of pine trees, olive trees, and oak trees, offering a sense of serenity. The monks still produce fine products, continuing the centuries-old monastic tradition of self-sufficiency and contact with the earth. You can try the wine, olive oil, honey, herbs, and sweets produced at the Monastery.
During your stay on Skiathos, make sure you visit the Monastery of Evangelistria, a place where faith, nature, and history coexist in harmony.
