Panagia Prousiotissa

Panagia Prousiotissa

The Spiritual Sanctuary of Evrytania

Perched atop an imposing and rugged crag of the Evrytania mountains, the Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa stands as one of Greece's most significant pilgrimage sites. Tradition has it that its founding dates back to 829, established by the monks Dionysios and Timotheos, who transported the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary from Bursa in Asia Minor to safeguard it from the Iconoclasm. However, historical evidence places the monastery's establishment between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Historical Landmarks and the Revolution
Prousou Monastery was more than just a religious centre. It has also served as a bastion of freedom. During Ottoman rule, it functioned as a refuge for non-combatants and became inextricably linked with Georgios Karaiskakis, who was nursed back to health there. Above the monastery, the famous Karaoulia still stand today: two stone towers built during the War of Independence to control the area. Despite the destruction it suffered at the hands of the Turks and it being set on fire by the Germans in 1944, the monastery was reborn, preserving rare frescoes from the 13th and 16th centuries.
Legends and Cultural Treasures
The location known as Typoma is of particular interest, where visitors can view the Footprints of the Virgin Mary. These are geological formations believed to be the footprints left by the Theotokos as she crossed over from Asia Minor. The monastery's museum houses valuable relics and personal belongings of Karaiskakis, while the Agathidis Library stands proudly in the village, having operated alongside the school since 1880, serving as a source of knowledge for the region.
Today, Panagia Prousiotissa continues to inspire awe in visitors, blending the rugged beauty of the landscape with the profound reverence and rich historical heritage of the Rumeli mountains.
