Symi’s Spiritual Beacon
In the southwestern part of Symi, nestled in a sheltered and picturesque bay, stands the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael of Panormitis. It is the most important pilgrimage site on the island and one of the most recognisable religious monuments in the entire Aegean. The monastery, combining the tranquility of the mountain with the sea breeze, was built in the early 18th century on the foundations of earlier temples.
The Miraculous Icon and the Katholikon
In the heart of the monastery complex is the Katholikon, a church dating from the 15th century. There dominates the dazzling, imposing and full-body icon of Archangel Michael, adorned in silver and gold. The icon is considered miraculous and awe-inspiring to the visitor, while the church is decorated with exceptional Byzantine frescoes and a masterfully crafted wood-carved iconostasis, a sample of the high local wood-carving tradition.

The Tradition of Votive Offerings
One of the most fascinating elements of Panormitis is the tradition that wants the votive offering of the faithful (often contained in bottles) to "travel" to the sea and wash up in the bay of the Monastery. The iconic, multi-storey bell tower in the Baroque style welcomes pilgrims arriving by boat, creating an atmosphere of devoutness that remains indelible in memory.
