Temples, monasteries and many festive panigyria
Lesvos is one of the most special destinations for travellers who wish to combine faith, tradition and natural beauty.
Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, patron and protector of the island, the Holy Monastery of the All-Great Archangels of Mantamados, in the northeastern part of Lesvos, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites. Every spring, on Myrrh-bearing Sunday after Easter, its annual panigyri attracts thousands of pilgrims.
Also, in the northeast of the island, 3 km. from the settlement of Thermi, lies the Holy Convent of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, which is considered a place of miracles. The great pilgrimage of “Lambrotritis” (Tuesday after Easter), when a solemn Hierarchical Divine Liturgy is celebrated, is of particular interest.
In the centre of Agiassos you will find the impressive church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary “Agia Sion”. Every August 15th, one of the largest panigyria in Greece is held there in honour of the Virgin Mary.
In Mytilene, admire the grandeur of the Holy Church of Agios Therapontos, a monument with a history of 130 years, and experience its panigyri in mid-May.
Between Vatera and Plomari, admire the unique Panagia Kryfti,, which has been designated a protected site.
At Tavros panigyri, which takes place every spring in the mountainous location of Tavros as well as in the square and traditional cafés in Agia Paraskevi, you will see one of the most impressive customs of Greece, the roots of which are lost in time.
