A majestic archaeological site
The imposing wall, approximately 9 km long, with its monumental gates—the Arcadian Gate being the most prominent—encircles the city and offers panoramic views of the Messenian plain. Within the archaeological site, the Theatre, the Stadium with the Gymnasium, the Agora, the Asclepieion (a sanctuary dedicated to the god of medicine), as well as temples, baths, and residences, are preserved in excellent condition.
A tour of the site, excavated and restored by the distinguished archaeologist Petros Themelis, reveals a living city designed for its citizens, rather than an isolated collection of monuments. Walk the entire route from the Arcadian Gate to the Stadium to fully appreciate the scale and cohesion of the ancient city. Be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Messene, located next to the entrance of the site.
During the summer, selected high-quality concerts are held at the ancient theatre, which are well worth attending.
