Archaeological Site of Maroneia

A timeless journey in the light of Thrace

In a privileged location approximately 30 km from Komotini lies ancient Maroneia, where the slopes of Mount Ismaros meet the sea. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and orchards, it is one of the most captivating archaeological destinations in Northern Greece.
The city was founded by colonists from Chios and developed into a powerful centre, closely linked to viticulture and to the mythical figure of Maron, priest of Apollo, who is mentioned in the Odyssey.
The landscape you encounter today remains largely untouched by time. Ancient olive groves and gardens encircle the monuments, creating a unique sense of tranquillity. The area is ideal for explorations that combine historical insight with an appreciation of nature.
The dominant monument of the site is the ancient theatre, renowned for its remarkable acoustics and its commanding views over the Thracian Sea. Over the centuries, the structure underwent significant alterations, including its conversion into a Roman arena, with protective barriers added to shield spectators during gladiatorial contests.
Continue your exploration towards the harbour of Agios Charalambos, where the monumental Roman Propylaeum stands prominently. This marble arch was erected in honour of Emperor Hadrian, confirming the city’s importance during the Roman period.
Beyond the classical remains, the area preserves important traces of Byzantine and later history. At the site known as Synaxi, you will discover surviving sections of an imposing basilica and a monastic complex, attesting to the region’s prosperity during the Middle Ages.
In the present-day village of Maroneia, the Tavaniótis Mansion offers a different perspective. This fine example of local architecture now houses significant archaeological finds, providing further insight into the area’s past.
Maroneia is not merely a static archaeological site, but a living narrative that begins with Homer and extends to the modern cultural traditions of Thrace.
